Tirupati: YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) general secretary and former MLA Bhumana Karunakar Reddy criticised the TDP government on Wednesday for unleashing the police to suppress the opposition party protests in the State.

Speaking to the media here, Karunakar Reddy said the rude behaviour of the police with the YSRCP activists at several places including Tirupati in the district during the bandh had revealed that the government trying to suppress the peaceful movement for Special Category Status (SCS) through force.

Even myself and women were not spared. We were roughed by the police when we were staging a peaceful protest. The saris of some women were torn when police dragged and dumped them in the vans during the dharna. It reminded me of a jungle raj,” he averred.

He slammed the police officials for not deploying women police to handle the women protestors. Bhumana said the party called for the bandh not for the benefit of his party president YS Jaganmohan Reddy or any other party leader but to protect the interests of the State.

The YSRCP was forced to give bandh call as nothing tangible came out with regard to SCS or special packages to the backward districts, even after the TDP-BJP combine had completed 28 months in power, he said reaffirming that the party will not deter to such tactics of the ruling TDP and would continue the fight with renewed vigor to achieve SCS and special packages.

YSRCP city president P Pratap Reddy, women wing city president C Kusuma, Lakshmi and others were present. Earlier, activists of the YSRCP’s women wing staged a protest in front of the Sub-Collector office, condemning the police for their rude behaviour with women protestors during the bandh.

Women wing district president Gayatri and city president Kusuma alleged that the police deliberately behaved very rudely with women protests, at the direction of TDP government to deter protestors. They said that they were not afraid of such barbaric behaviour of police and declared the party fight for SCS would go on till the Centre grants it.
