Visakhapatnam: Municipal Commissioner M Harinarayanan asked the officials to make Vizag as Open Defecation-Free (ODF) city by August 31 while reviewing the construction of individual toilets and maintenance of public toilets here on Thursday.

Harinarayanan disclosed that the GVMC is in the first place in the State by completing the construction of 9,369 individual toilets in its limits and directed the officials to chalk out an action plan to achieve ODF basing on Swachh Bharat Mission guidelines. He asked to publish a small booklet in Telugu stating about the importance of ODF and distribute it among the public.

Municipal chief engineer V Chandraiah disclosed about the construction of individual toilets and repairs of public toilets.
Earlier, the commissioner, who visited Sivagayatrinagar, Lakshmipuram, B C Colony and RTC Colony at 70th ward as part of his field visit, disclosed that Giriprasadnagar stood as an ideal colony in the GVMC in the construction of individual toilets.

He interacted with the residents, who told him that of the total 50 households, 48 persons have built individual toilets for which they were complimented. When some colony residents urged to provide roads and drains, the civic chief directed Zonal Commissioner N Sivaji and executive engineer Venugopal to prepare estimates.

He also asked executive engineer of water supply department Raja Rao to resolve the complaints lodged by the residents, who stated that the ground water is being contaminated with the nearby fisheries factory, which is letting out its waste water into the Papayyarajupalem gedda.

He also visited the NAD junction and suggested to plant more saplings on the road medians. Assistant City Planner Rammohan, assistant director of horticulture department Damodar and AMOH Dr Prasad accompanied the Commissioner.
