Bhimavaram: The Andhra Pradesh Rythu Karyacharana Samithi (APRKS) demanded the government to construct another barrage across River Godavari downstream the Dowleswaram barrage.

The samithi organised a meeting with farmers and farmer leaders at SRKR Engineering College here on Friday, on the necessity of protecting the Godavari Delta. Kalidindi Gopalakrishnam Raju presided over the meeting.

Speaking at the meeting, the former member of Rajya Sabha and samithi chairman Yarra Narayanaswamy said that during flood season, the tail-end lands in the delta area did not get water.

Expressing concern over the construction of lift irrigation schemes in the upstream by Telangana government, Narayanaswamy said Godavari delta in Andhra Pradesh did not get a single drop of water.

He suggested that the government set up Krishna-Godavari districts’ drainage board. SRKR Engineering College WET Centre coordinator Dr PA Ramakrishnam Raju demanded the Government to set up experts committee on protection of Delta areas.

He said the period from July to October is considered as Godavari river flood season. In view of this, from November every year, the lift irrigation schemes should be stopped, he stated.

He pointed out that if Godavari river water did not flow into the sea from the river mouth, the sea water enters the river area and the Delta becomes a desert.
