Tirupati: Popular film actor Pawan Kalyan on Tuesday donated Rs 2 lakh towards relief to the family of Congress activist Muni Kamakoti, who had committed suicide last year by setting himself ablaze for the cause of Special Category Status.

A representative of the film actor accompanied by his local fans association leaders went to the house of the Congress activist and handed over the relief amount to his wife Daksyayini at her residence in Korlagunta locality in the city. She will share the amount equally with Murali, brother of Muni.

It may be recalled that Muni Kama Koti, a senior Congress activist, immolated himself during the party meeting ‘Poru Sabha’ held here on August 8 last year, to press the Centre to accord Special Category Status to the state. A host of Congress leaders including party State president N Raghuveera Reddy and others participated in the meeting.

He doused himself with kerosene and set himself on fire even as the meeting was going on and succumbed to injuries at a hospital in Chennai on the next day.

The government announced Rs 5 lakh as relief to Muni’s family which still remains unfulfilled though an year passed after the Congress activist sacrificed his life.

The Congress party too announced an assistance of Rs 5 lakh but it has paid only Rs 1.3 lakh so far. YSRCP leader P Ramachandra Reddy handed over an assistance of Rs 3 lakh to the victim’s family on behalf of the party last year itself.
