Visakhapatnam: Andhra University Vice-Chancellor Prof G Nageswara Rao has been paying surprise visits to various departments, hostels and offices, in an effort to restore academic discipline and work culture on the varsity campus.

As a part of it, the V-C visited the women’s hostel at Maharanipeta here on Tuesday and inspected the facilities available there and the hostel rooms besides kitchen and store room. Later, he interacted with the students and asked the hostel staff to provide quality food for the inmates.

He asked the varsity engineering officials to complete sanitary and roof leakage repair works and directed chief warden T Sobhasri to send a letter to him about the capital repairs to be undertaken on behalf of the university. The chief warden was also asked to provide more drinking water points in the hostel.

Later, Prof Nageswara Rao visited Telugu department and noticed that majority of teachers and research scholars are not attending the classes in time.

He felt such practices should be avoided. He directed the principal to demand explanations from research scholars for irregular timings.

Later, speaking at an awareness programme conducted at the AU Exclusive Inclusive Policy Study Centre on ‘Scheduled Tribes-Issues and Perspectives for Development’ on Tuesday, the V-C appreciated the work culture of tribals.

AU Executive Council member Prof M Prasada Rao felt that integrated development of tribals would be possible only with political empowerment.

Registrar Prof V Umamaheswara Rao said that the university has been providing placements for tribals who were discharging duties with commitment.

Centre director Prof P Subba Rao and Arts College principal Prof K Gayatri Devi also spoke and a special souvenir was also released on the occasion.
