Eluru: Tenant farmers staged a dharna in front of the district Collectorate on Wednesday, demanding that the government solve their problems.Farmers from various parts of the district led by Andhra Pradesh Koulu Rythu Sangham (APKRS) participated in the dharna and expressed their protest in a novel manner by carrying a boulder-shaped model on their shoulders.

They raised slogans demanding that the government sanction loans to tenant farmers as they have already started cultivation.Addressing the farmers, APKRS State vice-president K Srinivas and joint secretary Juttiga Narasimha Murthy said that banks must sanction loans to tenant farmers irrespective of the agreements with the land owners.

Pointing out that there were about three lakh tenant farmers in West Godavari district, they criticised the official figures, which stated that 2.98 lakh tenant farmers were given the loan eligibility cards. They dismissed the official figures as fake. They stated that the guidelines of RBI and NABARD were not being implemented in the district.

APKRS district secretary D Ashok Kumar, CITU district secretary DNVD Prasad, Vyavasaya Karmika Sangham district secretary Jakkamsetty Satyanarayana and AKVPS district secretary PV Ramakrishna also addressed the farmers and expressed their solidarity with the agitation.

Later the APKRS leaders met the Collector K Bhaskar and submitted a memorandum. The agitation was led by APKRS leaders Dhanikonda Srinivas, M Anjaneyulu, J Srinivasa Rao, Meka Narayana and others.
