Tirupati: The veterinary college students of Sri Venkateswara Veterinary University (SVVU), here along with the unemployed veterinarians in the State staged a dharna on Thursday demanding the government to withdraw the move to involve APPSC in the recruitment of Veterinary Assistant Surgeons (VAS).

The veterinary students sat on an indefinite strike from Wednesday protesting against the State government’s improper decision with regard to the recruitment of VAS in the State.

The students said that the recruitment of VAS in the State was conducted as per the Government Order (GO) issued on June 22, 1989. The GO clearly states that veterinary surgeons have to be recruited by the Departmental Selection Committee (DSC) and not through APPSC.

The government officials have resolved to take up VAS recruitment through the APPSC which is unwarranted and unnecessary, the students said adding that it will create more problems to the candidates.

Earlier, students organised a rally from SVVU main gate to administrative building and staged a protest demanding that the government should rollback its decision of filling up VAS through APPSC.

A student delegation submitted a memorandum to SVVU Registrar Sudhakar Reddy seeking the Special Chief Secretary and Vice-Chancellor of SVVU Dr Manmohan Singh not to merge the recruitment of VAS into the APPSC and take necessary action regarding this issue as the posts notified are 330 and the number of unemployed graduates in the State are only 362.

The students said that they would go on relay hunger strike from Friday, to press the government to act immediately in favour of the veterinary students and unemployed graduates.
