Tirupati: Speakers at the inaugural of the five-day Innovation in Scientific Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE) internship camp which began here in Sri Venkateswara University (SVU) on Friday expressed concern over the craze for professional courses as it is coming in the way study of basic sciences essential for research and development.

They gave call for sustained efforts to encourage young minds pursue the subject of science as a career which would go a long way in promoting science and technology for the rapid development of the country.

Vikrama Simhapuri University (VSU) Vice-Chancellor Prof V Veeraiah said that India had got only 7 Nobel Prizes in the last 116 years, indicating the country with a huge population lagging far behind the smaller countries like Israel and Germany.

Observing that many inventions in the country is by the people in the age group of 19 and 32, Veeraiah underlined the need of creating awareness among the students from high school level, on the schemes like fellowships being provided by various government departments, science and research institutions to encourage them for taking up study in
sciences.

Tirupati-based Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in-charge Professor KN Satyanarayana said that science and technology play a key role in the development.

In this connection, he pointed out that 75 to 80 per cent of the graduates finding it difficult to get suitable jobs for want of skills and stressed on increasing the strength of trained young scientific minds.

He said the pilgrim city of Tirupati is now turning into a knowledge hub with the establishment of national institutions like IIT Indian Institute of Technology and Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, providing a congenial atmosphere for research. He strongly advocated on promoting inter-disciplinary research.

INSPIRE Science Camp-2016 Coordinator Prof B Deva Prasad Raju said that as many as 213 Intermediate science students from various colleges in Chittoor, Kadapa and Nellore districts, who were selected based on their SSC performance, attending the camp jointly organised by Department of Science and Technology and University Science Instrumentation Centre, in which they would have hands on practice and also do experiments in the university laboratories.

Besides, demonstration, interactions and series of talks by eminent personalities drawn from national institutions across the country including IITs and National Institutes of Technology was also arranged during the five-day camp to ignite the young minds and kindle scientific temper among them. SVU Rector M Bhaskar spoke on the facilities being provided in the varsity for promotion of research.
