Nellore: Fathekhanpet Rythu Bazaar which is centrally located at RTC Complex has lost its sheen due to vacant stalls and disinterest of the farmers and traders. What was once a market with brisk business activity, today it is just occupied by a rice trader selling organic rice, vegetables, pulses which are popular in city. Very few shops selling natural and herbal products, pickles and stalls catering to women’s needs exist in the market.
Other stalls which are meant for traders are vacant. The place has been literally abandoned by the traders from rural areas due to the apathy of the Marketing department and district officials.
They had squandered the opportunity by neglecting it to make it an important place for shopping. Rythu Bazaars were introduced with a view to remove the involvement of middlemen to help farmers to sell their produce directly to the costumers at reasonable prices every day. Fathekhanpet vegetable market is old and it was converted into Rythu Bazaar some time ago.
Initially, local farmers were using it for selling vegetables, rice, and other products in the Rythu Bazaar. But after the main vegetable market was shifted from Chinna Bazaar area to Madras Bus Stand centre, the farmers and local traders preferred that place since it is close to main road where people can walk from the main market to the place easily.
This is sheer negligence of the district administration in utilising a valuable land located in a central place, and they allowed local traders, who purchase from the main market and sell in the stalls at Madras Bus Stand.
They should have shifted these petty traders to the Fathekhanpet market. If this continues, some local land sharks or leaders would grab the highly valuable land,” said a retired official from the Revenue department.
There is another Rythu Bazaar in Nawabpet area, and there is enough attention by the administration on the same, which distributes subsidised pulses and onions. Locals feel that Fathekhanpet market can be utilised even for some exclusive grocery-related market on the lines of Pappula Bazaar of Stonehousepet area.
