Kurnool: Deputy Chief Minister K E Krishna Murthy said India is being described and perceived as the land of temples since times immemorial. He said temples play a crucial role in social and cultural life.

The Deputy Chief Minister took a holy dip at the VIP ghat in Sangameswaram on Sunday. As priests chanted Vedic hymns, Krishna Murthy performed Pinda Pradanam to his elders.

Earlier, priest Telkapalli Raghurama Sharma accorded warm welcome to the Deputy Chief Minister on his arrival at the VIP ghat. Speaking to the media after taking a holy dip, Krishna Murthy said temples have always occupied a prime place in a town or village.

He said temples were ideally suited for those wanting to meditate by concentrating on the almighty in the sanctum sanctorum. Speaking about the arrangements, he said sheds were put up with polished flooring for performing ‘pinda pradanam’ while cloak room facilities were arranged for 20,000 pilgrims. Donors came forward to provide free food to 15,000 pilgrims every day during the pushkaralu, he added.

He said additional police personnel were drafted for Pushkaralu duties from August 8. He said, “It is a rare opportunity for us to have taken a holy dip at this place and offering prayers at the temple as very soon, the water from the confluence of seven rivers will enter the sanctum sanctorum submerging Sri Sangameswara Vepadaru Sivalingam and the idol of Sri Lalitha Devi.”

He said elaborate arrangements were in place in all the three pushkar ghats with round-the-clock security and surveillance. There was rush in all ghats as pilgrims from Chittoor, Nandyal, Dhone and Bellary in Karnataka, have been thronging the pushkar ghats from day one, he added. Joint Collector C Hari Kiran, Additional SP T Chandrasekhar Reddy, Civil Supplies DM Venkatesham and TDP leader K E Pratap were also present.
