Amaravati: The continuous heat wave conditions in Amaravati since the start of Krishna Pushkaralu are proving tough for the elderly and the sick as well as police and employees on duty to cope with.

Due to the increased traffic and number of pilgrims day by day, the police are restricting the movement of vehicles in the temple and Krosur roads which lead to the bathing ghats , Amareswara Swami temple and Dhyanabuddha statue. The free buses arranged to pickup and drop of the pilgrims are also unable to reach the ghats.

Hence, almost every devotee have to walk about two kilometres to take a holy dip and wait in the wet clothes in scorching sun for around 15 to 20 minutes to change dress as there is an insufficient number of changing rooms available. The devotees who wanted to visit Amareswara temple are standing in hot sun for more than an hour before entering the shade in main temple.

The government and voluntary organisations distributed medicines free of cost for those suffering from symptoms like headache, body aches for the first two days. On the third and fourth day, more and more pilgrims were seeking medicine for sunstroke symptoms like nausea, vomiting and dizziness.

The doctors and medical personnel are administering ORS (oral rehydration solution) sachets and dispensing medicines to the affected people after allowing them to take rest for a while.

On Monday, one Ramesh, 60, a pilgrim from Secunderabad, died of heart attack near the Dhyanabuddha ghat. Another woman from Achampet slipped into the river after she complained of dizziness to the family members. The relatives shifted the woman to a private hospital in Guntur for better treatment.

As the day temperatures for past four days have been recording around 36 and 37 degree Celsius, the government has decided to distribute butter milk to the pilgrims in addition to the free water packets being given now.

Pedakurapadu MLA Kommalapati Sridhar said, “The number of pilgrims coming to Amaravati is increasing by the hour. As the heat wave continues for the fourth day, the Chief Minister ordered the District Collector to distribute butter milk packets for free to the pilgrims.

We are increasing the number of tents and expanding the existing one. The devotees facing problems may approach the medical centres for immediate response from the doctors.”
