Hyderabad: The number of young wannabe mothers visiting infertility institutes is on the rise. Experts are of the opinion that stress, auto-antibodies due to pollution and indiscriminate use of drugs could be some of the major causes for the rise in infertility among women.

A condition which was predominantly seen among older couples is now seen more frequently in women who are below 35 years of age.

Young women in their 20s are shocked when they realise that it is difficult for them to conceive, thereby shattering them emotionally. Many a time young women get panicky and want a quick result which forces them to take drugs indiscriminately.

“Modern day life has brought about too much stress and young women keep changing doctors and as a result there is a prolonged usage of drugs for ovulation, which is also a major reason for infertility,” observes Dr P Rama Devi of Dr Rama’s Institute for Fertility.

The number of young women with a decline in ovarian reserve is increasing, Dr Rama says. “Out of the 150-175 patients who come for treatment to her institutes in the city, about 20 per cent have been diagnosed with this problem,” she said.

Dr Saroja Koppala, fertility consultant at Nova IVI Fertility says, “Premature Ovarian Failure (POF) is a common condition that stops normal functioning of ovaries before the age of 40. The option for these women is to opt for donor eggs. This condition is seen more in women in their 20s and 30s.”

Some of the major symptoms of POF include irregular menstrual cycles, hot flushes, night sweats, and loss of libido. Family history of OPF is seen in 14-31 per cent of cases. Auto-antibodies to ovary due to pollution is a major contributor, say experts.

Dr Dakshayani, gynaecologist, Maxcure Hospitals says, “Stress too is a major cause. Most of the women with the problem who consult us work in the night shifts.”

According to NFHS report, three crore couples suffer from infertility and what is worrying is the rising incidence of young women facing infertility.

Dr Saroja says that women with POF need hormone replacement therapy as there is an increased risk of developing osteoporosis, cardiovascular disorders and coronary heart diseases.
