Pithapuram (East Godavari): The 70th Independence Day was celebrated in novel ways at Pithapuram on Monday. The national flag was hoisted at all educational institutions, government and private offices.

MLA SVSN Varma who attended the I- Day celebrations organized by several organisations as a chief guest, unfurled the national flag.

Holding the tricolour, Chintapalli Chittabbai, a ration-shop dealer of Nagulapalli village in U Kothapalli mandal, performed ‘Savasana’ in Kothapalli tank.

He remained floating in the tank for more than one hour. Chittiabbai said he was performing the unique feat in different villages every year on Independence Day to promote unity and integration of the nation.

Celebrations were organised on a grand scale at the ZP High School for Boys at Gollaprolu.

Carrying a 500-ft long tricolour, students took part in a rally organized by Vasavi Club in the village. MLA Varma flagged off the rally.
