Vijayawada: A 19-year-old engineering student, Suneeth, was bitten by a water snake at the Durga Ghat located at the foot of Indrakeeladri Hill on Monday.

While playing in water, Suneeth felt a bite on his right hand and noticed a snake moving away from him. He screamed and jumped out of water. The pilgrims, who were taking a holy dip, also rushed out of water.

The boy went to the first aid centre where the staff gave him first aid and sent him to a private hospital for better treatment. Suneeth was discharged after treatment. The sanitation staff and the swimmers working at the ghat went into water with nets and searched for the snake. But they could not trace any snake.

Though they declared that there was no snake, the pilgrims who walked out of water with fear after the snake incident did not venture into the river. However, others who were not aware of the incident took holy dip giving a sigh of relief to the staff working at the ghat.

Meanwhile, four persons died in different incidents in Krishna and Guntur districts on Monday. Three of them drowned in River Krishna while one suffered a heart attack.

According to police, engineering student Venkatakuduru Manikantha Aswanth (19) came with his family for the holy dip at Pavitra Sangamam near Ibrahimpatnam. While his father and mother were performing Pinda Pradanam, he entered water for bathing along with his sister and drowned.

The swimmers who were on duty jumped into water and took him out. The medical staff rushed him to a private hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead.

In another incident, Chundru Sakuntala (70) drowned in the river and died at Inapuru Ghat in Pamidimukkala mandal of Krishna district. She had hypertension for 10 years and was hospitalised for 10 days.

She was discharged two days back, a district official said. In Guntur district, two members died while taking holy dip. A resident of Hyderabad went to Amaravati Pushkar Ghat and suffered a heart attack.

At Penumudi, G Sirnivasa Rao (58) died of a cardiac arrest while taking a holy dip.
