Visakhapatnam: Minister for Finance Yanamala Ramakrishnudu said Vizag district has been playing a major role in the State’s economy. Addressing the Independence Day celebrations at the Police Barracks Ground here on Monday, the Minister said the district stood first in the State in per capita income and second at the national-level.

The district also developed 39 per cent in the industrial sector, 50 per cent in services, and 30 per cent in the agriculture sector.

“All other districts in the State should develop like Visakhapatnam in the agriculture sector,’’ the Minister told the I-Day revellers. He said that the State can develop only through agriculture and industries.

The Left canal of Godavari will be completed soon so that Visakhapatnam Steel Plant and the city could get enough water, the Minister added.

Stating that the district is endowed with rich natural resources, the Minister said the Chief Minister was determined to develop ports by which the city could become number one in the country.

“The Chief Minister also said the city will be developed like Singapore by improving service sector and industries,’’ the Finance Minister said.

The Minister later presented awards to the officials and employees of the State government for their meritorious services. Minister for Panchayat Raj

Ch Ayyanna Patrudu, local MP Dr K Haribabu, Zilla Parishad chairperson Lalam Bhavani, MLAs and District Collector Praveen Kumar were present.

Cultural programmes presented by various government schools attracted the audience. Vammavaram Zilla Parishad high school took the top prize for exhibiting gymnastics.

Tableaux from 13 departments showcased the development of the district.
