Out of the total 53,000 acres of Yeleru ayacut, 24,000 acres of land is located in Pithapuram Assembly constituency. Paddy plantation in this Kharif has been completed in 4,500 acres only due to shortage of irrigation water. Pithapuram (East Godavari): Despite 1,150 cusecs of water being released from Yeleru every day, the tail-end areas of the ayacut are not getting water. As a result, the canal at Narsingapuram has gone dry and the newly transplanted paddy saplings in hundreds of acres are withering due to lack of water.

Out of the total 53,000 acres of Yeleru ayacut, 24,000 acres of land is located in Pithapuram Assembly constituency. Paddy plantation in this Kharif has been completed in 4,500 acres only due to shortage of irrigation water. Farmers are a worried lot as it is already the middle of August and plantation of paddy is way behind schedule.

According to officials, there is 5.4 tmc water in Yeleru reservoir. Pithapuram ayacut gets Yeleru water from Divili sluice. A level of above 4 ft is being maintained in the canal at Divili to facilitate release of water to the entire ayacut.

About 600 cusecs of water is being released daily from Divili sluice. Though there is water in the canal till Chandramampalli canal, it is not reaching the tail-end areas, for reasons unknown.

A team of officials led by MLA SVSN Varma inspected the canals in the ayacut on Tuesday to ascertain the cause of water-scarcity in the tail-end areas. On finding that the canal water was going waste due to lack of sluice shutters, the MLA vented his anger on irrigation officials for their apathy, which he said was affecting hundreds of ayacut farmers.

He directed Irrigation Assistant Engineer Appa Rao to ensure that the sluice shutters were fixed by the end of the month. Keeping in view the non-completion of paddy plantation, the State government has permitted the drawing of water from Pithapuram Branch Canal to Yeleru ayacut.
