The Water Resources Department (WRD) officials released 10,335 cusecs of water from Prakasam Barrage to Krishna Delta irrigation canals. Of these 7,106 cusecs of water were released to Krishna Eastern Delta, 3,007 cusecs to Western Delta for paddy fields and 225 cusecs of water to Gunter Channel for drinking water purpose. 

Vijayawada: The Water Resources Department (WRD) officials released 10,335 cusecs of water from Prakasam Barrage to Krishna Delta irrigation canals. Of these 7,106 cusecs of water were released to Krishna Eastern Delta, 3,007 cusecs to Western Delta for paddy fields and 225 cusecs of water to Gunter Channel for drinking water purpose.

For the first time, officials released 11,000 cusecs of water into the sea by lifting 14 crest gates of the barrage here on Wednesday. The barrage has been receiving about 18,000 cusec inflows as heavy rain was recorded upstream catchment areas.

The streams in the catchment area are overflowing with the rainwater increasing the inflows into the Krishna. More than 640 cusecs of water from Vajinepalli, 2,350 cusecs from Keesara and 4,250 cusecs from Velagaleru reached the barrage. Most of the water is from Dachepalli, Sattenapalli, Achampet of Guntur district, Nandigama of Krishna district and Paleru of Khammam district in Telangana.

Krishna district superintendent engineer S Sugunakara Rao told The Hans India that the inflows were increasing to Prakasam Barrage and the level of the barrage exceeded 12 feet. Total 14 gates were lifted and 11,000 cusecs of water were discharged into sea, he said.

Discharges through the Polavaram Right Main Canal and Pulichintala projects were closed while the flood water from the catchment area has been reaching the barrage, he added.
