Visakhapatnam: Ganesh idols are growing taller and taller with every passing year due to the competition among the organisers in the city and the enthusiasm being shown by the people. Several idols have crossed 50 feet and some reached over 100 feet.

At MVP Colony, the statue was made of 100 feet in a posture that is going to attract maximum crowd in the city. The idol is getting final touches as Ganesh Chaturthi falls on September 5.

The pandal is being erected by Maha Ganapathi Yuvajana Seva Sangham from MVP Colony area in the city and the organisers claimed that it could be the tallest in the entire city. “The idol would be over 100 feet tall though we have not measured it so far,’’ said President of Sangham B Trimurthulu.

Similarly, another group of organisers are erecting over 78 feet tall eco-friendly Ganesh idol at Gajuwaka area, close to the steel plant. The organisers have engaged skilled craftsmen from Kolkata for making this tall idol.

Following the police restrictions on immersion of tallest Ganesh idols, the organisers of the tallest Ganesh idols in the city said that they will make arrangements for immersion by dissolving them on the spot with sprinklers taking help from the fire services department.

ADCP (Special Branch) PV Ravi Kumar said that so far they received over 930 applications from various organisers for obtaining permission from police, fire service, GVMC and EPDCL for erecting pandal and immersion.

He said the applications will be accepted till September 4. Number of applications may go up to 2,000. After verifying the applications, permission will be issued, he added.
