Visakhapatnam: The State government should revive Harikatha for future generations, said founder of Sri Adibhatla Srikalapeetham and TV and movie artiste Kalyani.Considered as an ancient art form, Harikathas are becoming rare and artists practising the art are finding it difficult to make ends meet.
Kalyani, who is organising a three-day Harikatha Mahotsav in the city to mark the 152nd birth anniversary celebrations of Harikatha Pithamaha Adibhatla Narayanadas, speaking to The Hans India here on Thursday, lamented that the government was not encouraging the ancient art form. She appealed to the government to develop the residence of Adibhatla in Vizianagaram giving heritage status on the lines of Mahakavi Gurajada’s residence.
She also appealed to the Central government to patronise Harikatha artists by conferring Padmasri and Padmabhushan to the famous artistes like M V Simhachala Sastry, teacher in Tirupati Music and Dance College, Dhulipala, Indirabala and Rao Kamala Kumari as was being given to other professionals to revive the art form.
Aiming to encourage the art form, Kalyani has established Sri Adibhatla Srikalapeetham in 2011, since then, she has been organising Harikatha Mahotsav in Vizag city for three days.
She said the mega event ‘Nirvirama Harikatha Ashtottara Satha Gaana Yagnam’ which was conducted in Hyderabad for 114 hours in June, 2015 involving 100 artists entered the Limca Book of Records.
At the age of five, I was interested to learn the art and my first guru is my father Padala Ramadas who is also Mridangam artiste. From the age of 10, I started giving stage performances of rendering keertanas from my second Guru Appali Raghavendra Rao,” she recalled.
The founder of Sri Adibhatla Srikalapeetham urged the State government to install a life-size statue of Adibhatla at the main junction in Vizianagaram. She further asked the government to introduce Harikatha wing at MR Government Music and Dance College, Viziangaram, provide pension to Harikatha artists and recommend to the Centre for according Bharata Ratna award to Adibhatla.
Movie artiste popularly known as Karate Kalyani disclosed that she was planning to conduct a mega event next year by organising Harikatha performances continuously 365 days covering the entire State to give a fillip to the dying art form, she disclosed.
