Rajamahendravaram: East Godavari district collector H Arun Kumar made it clear that only boats which follow the stipulated guidelines would be allowed into the Godavari. He conducted a review meeting with boat owners and tourism, irrigation and police officials on Saturday.
Speaking on the occasion, Arun Kumar said that boat owners should keep the security of passengers in mind and follow all norms. He mentioned that the existing guidelines were formulated in 2012 and said that new rules would be framed soon.
He observed that minor accidents have been taking place in tourism boats of late and added that only 30 percent out of 24 tourism boats were of ‘A’ grade. He emphasised that the security of passengers was of paramount importance. He directed owners to obtain licenses and insurance and keep life jackets, medical kits, fire extinguishers, double engines and wireless sets available on the boats.
In the wake of thriving tourism in the region, he mentioned that these steps were essential to sustain the system for a long time. With the tourist season set to start next month, he asked the boat owners to prepare themselves accordingly in tune with the regulations.
The Collector also directed the irrigation officials to be cautious while renewing licenses and giving permissions. Stating that a single-window system would be implemented forgiving permissions to boats through irrigation, forest, police and tourism departments, he called upon boat operators to make use of the same.
General Manager, APTDC, Nageswara Rao said it was mandatory for every boat to possess a depth indicator and double engines. He added that the drivers should get licenses from the fisheries department, port department and National Institute of Water Sports, Goa. Boat operators complained to the Collector that local insurance companies were not cooperating with them.
They also requested the Collector to arrange for training to the boat drivers. Bheemashankar, CEO, Akhanda Godavari Project and Adnan Nayeem, Rampa Chodavaram ASP participated in the meeting.
