Srikakulam: Blessed with abundant marine resources spread across the coastline, the State is heading for a blue revolution. The aqua industry, already the biggest revenue grosser with an estimated Rs 20,000 crore annual earnings, is gearing up for a major leap.

The coastal aqua culture zone begins from Srikakulum in the north east to Nellore district, extending to 974 km and includes 33,227 square km of continental shelf area and 1.74 lakh hectares of brackish water and eight lakh hectares of freshwater resources. The industry continues to pin its hopes on inland fish production and set a target of achieving a production of 19,750 tonnes every year in the district.

The State government has introduced various schemes for the construction of fish ponds, for purchasing nets, fish seed, engine boats, vehicles to transport fish to market and construction of fish selling shops in the markets with 90 per cent subsidy to farmers belonging to SC community and 50 per cent subsidy for farmers of other communities.

It may be noted that the Centre has sanctioned a Brooder Multiplication Centre for L Vannanair Shrimp for Andhra Pradesh, a Central Institute for Brackishwater Aquaculture (CIBA) regional office at Vijayawada and a Fishery Brood Bank, thereby giving a boost to the fledgling aqua culture industry.

Over 650 fish ponds were constructed in Itchapuram, Kaviti, Sompeta, Vajrapukotturu, Santhabommali, Polaki, Gara and Etcherla mandals. Fish farming is being taken up in 655 farm ponds across the district.

To promote imports of fish breed from other countries mainly from USA, aquatic quarantine facility (AQF) was proposed at Bangarampeta village in Nakkapalli mandal of Visakhapatnam district. From the AQF, farmers in surrounding districts will get quality fish.

With an aim to develop quality seed within the State, Brooder Multiplication Centre (BMC) was proposed in Nellore district. From the BMC, quality seed will be supplied to all coastal districts.

With the support of AQF and BMC, farmers can import quality fish seed and develop better fish seed locally. The State government allotted Rs 50 lakh for fish seed farm to overcome seed scarcity. It is learnt that every year, six crore fish seed is required in the district.

Out of 7,541 tanks in the district, fish farming is being taken up in 655 farm ponds,” Deputy Director of Fisheries V V Krishna Murthy told The Hans India. He said that a lab was also sanctioned in the district to diagnose disease in fresh water fish locally.
He said that the State government has been giving additional incentives and facilities to encourage aqua farmers.

He said the government identified fisheries as one of the growth engines and thus would promote shrimp farming, mechanisation of aquaculture and development of fresh water fish broodstock centres and hatcheries for quality seed production.
