Tirupati: With only a day left for Ganesh Chaturthi, the city is in the grip of festive spirit. The streets leading to the main Indira Priya Darsini Market as well other sub-markets at various places filled with vendors selling Ganesh idols of small and big with glittering colours.

A welcome change this year was most of the sellers engaged in the sale of idols that are eco-friendly, thanks to increase in the awareness level against idols made of substances like PoP, synthetic and chemical colours inimical to environment.

Social organisations, schools, institutions and individuals joined the campaign to stress the need to celebrate the festival in such a manner that will not add to the pollution more so to the water bodies, where the idols will be immersed after the conclusion of the fete.

YSRCP Chandragiri MLA started distribution of 20,000 clay idols free of cost, in an effort to promote the celebration with eco-friendly clay idols at Thummalagunta, while Rotary Club, Pollution Control Board, Tirupati Rotary Club, Sai Sudha Multi Specialty Hospital and others too distributed clay idols.

Srivari School in Korlagunta here took out an awareness rally on Saturday to stress the need to celebrate the fete in an eco-friendly manner among people.

An Awareness programme was also taken up at Spring Dale Public School here in which the school students dressed as Lord Ganesh and carried placards to stress the need to use eco-friendly idols. A meeting was held in which school correspondent K S Vasu and others spoke.

Sri Vigneswara Paper Mesh and Terracotta Welfare Association here at Bommala Quarters, Mangalam area, comprising 150 potter families are making eco-friendly Ganesh idols on a large scale for sales in Rayalaseema, Chennai and Bengaluru.

Speaking to The Hans India, Association president Tirumala Prasad said that despite the complaint from the association, several times, the authorities are not taking action against the idol makers who come from north few weeks ahead of the festival for selling PoP idols at a cheaper rate which is hitting their business and also affecting the environment.

These people come every year few weeks before the festival, camp at road side and sell the idols made of PoP and glittering synthetic colours at a cheaper rate, he said, criticising the authorities for turning a blind eye on them.

Meanwhile, Sri Varasidhi Vinayaka Utsava Committee convener Samachni Srinivas said that they have taken up a special campaign for celebrating the festival in an eco-friendly manner.

Speaking to the media after a coordination meeting on Vinayaka Nimarjan which is slated to be held on September 7 at Vinayak Sagar, Srinivas said that this year, about 750 Ganesh pandals were coming up in the city.

The idol procession, will be taken out from five directions, towards the tank for immersion on September 7.He urged the festival organisers to ensure the conduct of the festival in an orderly, peaceful and devotional manner at public places and also smooth immersion of the idols on the last day of the three-day celebrations here.
