Vijayawada: Students, who attended MBBS and BDS counselling and their parents, staged a protest on Saturday at Dr NTR University of Health Sciences demanding that the authorities should conduct counselling for the qualified candidates of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Jammu & Kashmir only under the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET).

They raised objection to the counselling being conducted for the candidates of all the States as that would deny the admission chances for the local students.

Dr NTR University of Health Sciences started counselling to fill 667 MBBS and 367 BDS seats in medical colleges of three States. On first day, the university called candidates from rank one to one lakh for counselling. The university authorities conducted counselling for ‘B’ category seats for filling of management quota basing on the NEET.

Some parents and students went to the Vice-Chancellor’s chambers to register their protest, but in vain as he was not present. Then they went to counselling hall and staged a protest and tried to stop counselling.

The parents discussed with the counselling convener Dr K Jaya Kumar and asked him to show the counselling order and stop conducting counselling to the students of all the States. They also said that the High Court had directed the university to conduct counselling for the students of these three States under Article 361(D) and not for the students of other States.

However, the university officials refused to stop the counselling as they have not received the High Court order.A parent from Visakhapatnam ASN Murthy alleged that the counselling conducted by university was illegal. Other States didn’t consider these students for counselling, but NTR University is favouring other State students, he pointed out.

Vice-Chancellor Dr Ravi Raju said that they were conducting counselling as per rules. There is no reservation to fill ‘B’ category seats, he added. “We didn’t receive the High Court order till now, if order comes we will verify and obey the orders,” he made it clear.
