Pithapuram: The Jai Ganesh temple here has been decorated using 16 tons of sugarcane, 5,000 corn cob and 500 kg of marigold flowers for the Ganesh navaratri celebrations commencing from Monday.

With the decoration, Lord Ganesha appears as though he was founded in a sugarcane field. The idea is to appease the elephant-headed God with sugarcanes and cob of corn, which elephants cherish much.

Last year, the temple set a record of sorts by installing a huge palavelli (a square frame made using bamboo strips) and came out with a new idea this year. According to temple priest Mylavarapu Ramakrishna, the temple conducts Ganapati Navaratri celebrations on a grand scale annually.

On account of Ganesh festival, special puja and abhishekams will be performed to the elephant-headed God in the wee hours of Monday. Temple committee chairman Kodigudla Manikyalarao and others took part in the decoration programme.
