Hyderabad: The Telangana State government has decided to raise the issue of use of excess water from Krishna and Godavari rivers and construction of illegal projects by neighbouring Andhra Pradesh at the apex council meeting convened by its chairman and Union Minister for Water Resources Uma Bharti in New Delhi.

According to sources, the meeting is likely to be held on September 19 as the AP Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu would be busy with Assembly session that would begin from Thursday. The Union Ministry, in a letter to both the chief ministers, suggested three dates- September 11, 18 and 19- for the meeting and asked them to inform which date would be convenient for both of them.

This meeting is intended to resolve water disputes between the two States. Based on a complaint lodged by the AP government with the Ministry against the ‘alleged illegal’ construction of Palamuru Ranga Reddy Lift Irrigation Scheme and Dindi project by the TS government, the Centre has decided to convene the meeting and resolve the issue.

Telangana irrigation officials said the government has prepared a detailed report on Pattiseema project on Godavari, Pothireddipadu, RDS Right Canal and Muchumarri project on Krishna, which AP government was constructing without the approval of the apex committee.

The AP government, it said, had violated all norms in regard to the utilisation of water under Pothireddipadu and was drawing more water than what it should thereby depriving Telangana of its share. TS government also alleged the AP has also prepared Detailed Project Report (DPR) for RDS (Rajolibanda Diversion Scheme) Right Canal without informing Central Water Commission (CWC) and Krishna River Management Board (KRMB).

As per the AP Reorganisation Act, the two States should get CWC and KRMB nod before taking up any project on Krishna and Godavari, the officials said. Once the Muchumarri project was completed, there is every possibility of taking away water when the levels reach 810 ft at Srisailam by the neighbouring State.

AP is entitled to utilise only 512 tmcft of allocated water in Krishna, TS officials said. The TS government would raise the issue and demand to protect its interests.
