Visakhapatnam: All India Congress Committee Vice-President and Lok Sabha MP Rahul Gandhi will take up the cause for special category status to Andhra Pradesh by visiting the State in the first week of October.

He will address a public meeting at Vijayawada, said Congress MP and Chairman of the Committee on Subordinate Legislation (Rajya Sabha) Dr T Subbarami Reddy.

The Union government has failed to honour its commitment and has been trying to mislead the people of the State by comparing it with other States on the issue of special category status, said Reddy.

He said APCC chief N Raghuveera Reddy would announce the itinerary of Rahul’s visit to the State and added that senior party leaders from many parts of the country would take part in the public meeting at Vijayawada to express solidarity with the Gandhi scion.

Regarding the proposals for setting up a railway zone at Amaravati, the MP said that Vizag was a suitable place for establishing a new railway zone.

“In case the Union government announces a new railway zone with Vijayawada as the headquarters, the Congress will agitate against the decision,” said Reddy and questioned as to how the Centre can ignore the interests of Vizagites by citing objections from Odisha and Chhattisgarh to the establishment of a railway zone at Vizag.

On a different note, the MP said his birthday celebrations would be held at the municipal stadium in the city on September 17.

Rajya Sabha vice chairman PJ Kurien would grace the celebrations as chief guest and Tollywood actor Mohan Babu would be conferred with the title of Navarasa Nata Tilakam on the occasion, said Reddy.
