Hyderabad: Leader of the Opposition Y S Jaganmohan Reddy wants people of Andhra Pradesh to emulate the fighting spirit of Chief Minister of Telangana K Chandrasekhar Rao, if they want to achieve the Special Category Status for the State.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, he said that had KCR given up his fight, separate Telangana State would not have been a reality today. “He could achieve this when everyone thought creating a separate State was not possible. So, we should not give up and continue our fight for it,” he averred.

He reiterated his demand for the resignation of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu for welcoming the financial package announced by Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in lieu of SCS. Jagan lashed out at Jaitley for claiming to have done some kind of special favour to the State.

The YSRCP chief said that there was nothing new in what Jaitley had announced. “IIT, IIM, NIT, Central Universities, AIMS were being established in every State having more than one crore population as part of a national policy and it was no favour done to the State,” he remarked. He said that the 14th Finance Commission as a policy, bridges the resources gap irrespective of whether a State has SCS or not, and this way 11 States would get benefit during the commission’s tenure. “It was part of this policy that the AP would be getting Rs 22,500 crore during 2015-2020 and there was nothing new in it,” he claimed.

He challenged Union Finance Minister to show where the 14th Finance Commission recommended against granting SCS. “It was not mandatory on the part of government to implement the recommendations of the Finance Commission.

Chief Minister surrendered the interests of the State to save himself from the cash-for-vote case,” he alleged. He accused the TDP for targeting his party MLAs, who are trying to raise SCS and pressing for a discussion in the Assembly.
