Jammalamadugu (Kadapa): Uncertainty looms large over the conduct of Gandikota heritage festival this year. While participating in Gandikota heritage festival held on September 26 and 27 last year, Human Resource Development Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao, who is also the District In-charge Minister, said it would be an annual event henceforth. Local people are doubtful over the conduct of heritage festival this year as the district officials have not made any announcement in this regard so far.

Madhava and Ranganatha Swamy temples, Jamia Masjid and Rayala Cheruvu are the major attractions of Gandikota founded by Kapa Raja in 1123, which is rich with architecture and sculpture of Vijayanagara style. Floored by the grandeur of the fort on the right bank of Pennar river and its scenic surroundings, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu vowed to develop the historic place as a major tourist destination in Kadapa district.

A sum of Rs 16 crore was released from the Special Development Fund for laying a two-lane road from Gudem Cheruvu to Kottalapalli village. The Roads and Buildings Department is yet to invite tenders for the road project announced by the Chief Minister. The proposal to introduce boating in the `Grand Canyon’ is still on paper. No steps have been taken to desilt the river at the place.

A theme song highlighting the glory of Gandikota was picturised by cine director Neelakanta to promote the tourist place. But the theme song has not been put to effective use to popularise Gandikota and its rich heritage. It seems the Tourism Department is not really committed to promoting the historic Gandikota fort as a major attraction.

Otherwise, it would have implemented all the development proposals to tap the rich tourism potential of Gandikota. Though Gandikota does not have adequate facilities and other basic infrastructure, many tourists visit the fort every day. Local people are of the view that the tourism potential of the fort can be tapped fully if basic infrastructure is developed.
