Ongole: The incessant rains for the past three days raised hopes of farmers in the Prakasam district. Flood from streams and rivulets helped the Gundlakamma reservoir to reach about 95 per cent of the full reservoir level.

As the flow is steady at 3,000 cusecs, the district administration is making arrangements for release of water for irrigation by the Chief Minister.The drought hit farmers in the district heaved a sigh of relief, as Giddalur and surrounding areas received 8.76cm of rain on Thursday, which was the highest in the past 20 years. The total rainfall in the past three days was more than 14 cm. Chirala received 8.2 cm rain fall on Thursday, totaling the rainfall in last three days to 17.4cm.

Similar type of heavy rains lashed in Chimakurthy, SN Padu, Maddipadu, Pullacheruvu, Tallur, Karemchedu, Mundlamur, Kurichedu, Korisapadu, Darsi, Racherla, Kondapi and other areas.The Kandula Obul Reddy Gundlakamma project, which has a capacity of 3.85 tmcft, can irrigate 80,600 acres of land. After two years, the reservoir received heavy flood and the water level is at 22.37 metres, while the full reservoir capacity is 24.38 metres.

The officials are assuming that the Ongole and nearby villages need not have to worry about drinking water for two years, besides supply of irrigation water to the farmers. The release of water from the Gundlakamma reservoir by the Chief Minister has been postponing for the past two years, as there was not enough water.

Now, as the reservoir is almost full, the Chief Minister Office asked the district administration to make arrangements for the visit of the Chief Minister and Irrigation Minister to release of the water.

Minister for Transport Sidda Raghava Rao, collector Sujatha Sharma, Bapatla MP Sriram Malyadri visited the Gundlakamma project on Thursday afternoon verified the status of head regulator, crust gates and helipad.

The Chief Minister is giving utmost priority to the water. He is trying hard to increase the ground water levels to tackle drought. Neeru-Chettu, Neeru-Pragati programmes by the government strengthened the tanks,” the Minister added.
