Rajamahendravaram: The State government is all set to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Airports Authority of India (AAI) on Regional Air Connectivity (RAC) which will enable passengers to travel within the State at low fares. The East Godavari district administration has completed the process of handing over of 852.42 acres of land to AAI for expanding Madhurapudi Airport.

Director of Madhurapudi Airport, M Raj Kishore, said that the MoU on RAC would facilitate AAI to operate flights between Rajamahendravaram and different airports within States like Visakhapatnam, Tirupati, Gannavaram, Kadapa and a few more airports which will be constructed in the future.

He also said that at present only ATR flights with 70-passenger capacity are landing in Madhurapudi Airport and added that after the expansion of the runway at the Airport, A-321, A-320 and Boeing 737 flights will also land. He said that the number of passengers went up to about 24,000 per month against about 12,000 in June 2015.

At present, 12 flights are being operated by three operators namely Jet Airways, Spice Jet and TruJet and from September 23, TruJet will be operating from Rajamahendravaram to Bangalore. The Airport Director said that there would be changes in flight timings after September 20 and added that all the three operators will be announced shortly.

The present 1,750-metre runway will be extended to 3,165 metres and the number of aprons will be going up to five from the existing two. Emergency flight landing facility, cold storages and warehouses for perishable and non-perishable goods will be constructed within one year.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu in the presence of Union Ministers M Venkaiah Naidu, Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju, Minister of Science and Technology Sujana Chowdary and other aviation officials will be signing RAC on Monday at Madhurapudi Airport after laying the foundation stone for works worth Rs 181 crore, which include expansion of runway, construction of compound wall, grading air field and other associated technology.

The district administration handed over 852.42 acres to AAI from which it acquired around 720 acres from 526 farmers by paying around Rs 290 crore. AAI Chairman Guruprasad Mohapatra, Civil Aviation Secretary RS Choubey and other senior officials participated in the programme.
