Vijayawada: Speakers at a national seminar explained about the measures to be taken to dispose the solid waste. The seminar was conducted by the PG Department of Chemistry, SRR & CVR Government Degree College, here on Friday.

Addressing the seminar, department of science and technology scientist Dr K Krishna Kanth Pulicherla said that Ministry of Science and Technology is striving to use technologies, which would be useful to Indian conditions, to solve the solid waste problem, generate revenue and fulfil industrial needs by recycling different types of waste, including waste from hospitals, electric devices, construction material and others.

He said that e-waste had a challenge before society and was hazardous for the health of human beings as well as other creatures. E-waste contains lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, flame retardant and others which pose a threat to the people.

Mumbai Municipal Corporation was producing power by recycling dry waste like metals and plastic glasses, he said.Sanghamitra Research Training and Consultation, which is working as a consultant to Andhra Pradesh government, founder director Dr G Choodamani said the reason behind the failures by the municipal corporations and other government bodies in solid waste management is they espouse advanced models of foreign countries like Singapore, China and Japan.

We have our own age-old model of varmi compost, which is a simple solution and suitable to our local conditions,” she said. Sangamitra was organising ‘varmi compost’ plants in 659 mandal headquarters and villages across the State.
