Vijayawada: Forest department has hastened the Nagara Vanam works in Kothuru forests at Jakkampudi village on the outskirts of Vijayawada at a cost of Rs 2.5 crore. The objective of Nagara Vanam project is to provide walking track, restaurant, children’s park and recreation zone in the lush green area covered by trees and plants. Kothuru forest is ideal place for such attractive eco-friendly project.

The Andhra Pradesh government had decided that every district has at least one Nagara Vanam. Union Minister Prakash Javadekar and Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu laid foundation stone on July 17, 2015.

The forest department will spend Rs 1.25 crore in the first year and the same amount in the second year in two year project works. The department has started the Nagara Vanam works recently. So far, trees and bushes were removed and walking track was formed at the Nagara Vanam site in the forests. It will plant 12 types of saplings in the name of zodiac or star signs.

The department is also planning to construct a hill view point at the foot of the hill and near Polavaram canal. Visitors can see the spectacular view of Nagara Vanam from the developed site at the foot of the hill.

Children’s park, restaurant and some shops will also come up at the Nagara Vanam as part of the total project. Kothuru forest in Jakkampudi and Ambapuram limits is located along Vijayawada- Vissannapet R&B road.

The Vanam will give new look with the plantation of attractive trees and plants in the coming years. Nagara Vanam is expected to be completed in two years, said Forest Range Officer (RFO) RV Prasad. The department would construct the project in two phases. Walking track formation works were already completed and other works would start soon. People from the city would go to Nagara Vanam for refreshments as well as entertainment, he added.
