Ponnuru (Guntur): Dalit leader Dr Kathi Padma Rao, on Friday, blamed the State government for its failure to handle floods in the Palnadu region of Guntur district. Addressing a news conference, Dr Padma Rao accused the government of failing to predict the floods and prevent the damage. He said that the floods rendered thousands of people homeless, as water entered their houses. He also pointed out that the habitations of Dalits and weaker sections were damaged.

Stating that the Dalits and the weaker sections live in the low-lying areas, he pointed out that government should have taken precautionary measures to protect these habitations.

He lamented that the primary health centres in low-lying areas were marooned in the flood water, depriving the people of primary health.

He alleged that Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu had failed to assess the floods and check the canal systems. “Chandrababu Naidu is known for his technology-driven administration rather than the realistic governance. He failed to totally to check the streams, rivulets and rivers whether they were in a position to take heavy inflows leading to chaos,” he alleged.

Dr Padma Rao wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking special assistance to protect Dalits and other weaker sections’ habitations from inundation in future. He wanted the State and the Central governments to prepare plan to redesign the habitations of these sections and ensure that they are not inundated in future.
