Visakhapatnam: The much touted heli tourism, expected to boost the tourism potential of the city, will be launched from Dasara, said HRD Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao. The Minister visited VUDA Park where the helipad is located and built at a cost of Rs 28 lakh, on Saturday.

He said heli tourism will not only attract the tourists from other parts of the State but also attract people from neighbouring States of Odisha, Chattisgarh and West Bengal. The city gets lot of tourists from West Bengal during Dasara.

A memorandum of understanding was signed by VUDA and Sky Choppers Logistic Private Limited in August this year. The six-seater helicopter will make two sorties - city and Araku Valley, as per the MoU. Sources said that an amount of Rs 2,000 will be charged per head for Kailasagiri-Bhimili and Rs 5,000 for Araku Valley.

However, the final fares will be finalised in October only, the Minister said.The helicopter ride to Kailasagiri and back to VUDA Park would take around 7 minutes while the ride to Araku would last for about 20 minutes. The firm is offering Rs 10 lakh insurance cover for the travellers in the chopper, mandatory under DGCA rules.

He said Vasantotsavam would be revived on the beach village of Vennelapalem. Beach villages of Revupolaaram, Mutyalammapalem and Pudimadaka would be developed before onset of this year Dasara vacation. In order to attract pilgrims, the Buddhist shrines of Thotlakonda, Bojjannakonda and Bavikonda would be spruced up.
