Kurnool: The calcium-score screening heart scan test will be a boon for public in ensuring the trouble-free heart for the next 15 years, Dr Ramesh Babu, consultant cardiologist, said at a meeting in Kurnool on Sunday after after receiving the outstanding person of the year award from Kurnool Heart Foundation.

He said the state-of-the-art computerised tomography methods, such as calcium screening test are the most effective way to detect early coronary calcification from atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), before symptoms develop.

The amount of coronary calcium has been recognised as a powerful independent predictor of future heart problems and is useful in making lifestyle changes and guiding preventive care to reduce their risk. A negative calcium score was nothing but a certification for the next 15 years.

He said awareness about heart diseases was as important as treatment because most of the patients visited gastroenterologists, orthopedicians and even dentists before reaching the cardiologists because of the presentation of peculiar symptom in heart attacks. The patients developed discomfort and pain in the middle of the chest right from abdomen to chin and even in shoulders or back. Most of the patients, who experienced the symptoms first time, tend to write them off as gastric discomfort, or pain in the shoulders on account of orthopedic problem. Some patients even got their tooth extracted due to pain in the lower jaw which was typical in heart attacks.

He said the first four hours after onset of the stroke was crucial for the patient for survival with less damage to heart muscle. The Cardiological Society of India , AP Chapter, and Ramesh Hospitals, undertook a campaign to educate the public and families about the heart disease and immediate steps required to tackle the crisis. The Kurnool Heart Foundation, under the stewardship of cardiologist and head of Department Dr P Chandrasekhar, has been campaigning in Rayalaseema districts since 2003 by celebrating the World Heart Day and presenting the outstanding person of the year award to one of the luminaries in the field of cardiology.
