Chittoor: Four decades old Gandhi statue situated at Gandhi circle here will be replaced with a metal one soon at a new spot. The Chittoor Municipal Corporation has resolved to demolish the existing statue and erect a new metal (Panchaloha) statue. However, the move has triggered widespread resentment among Opposition parties Congress, YSRCP and Left parties.
Chittoor MLA D K Satya Prabha came forward to bear the cost of the proposed new Gandhi statue, but opposition parties have given an ultimatum to the Chittoor Municipal Commissioner against shifting it to the proposed new site Statues Island.
It may be noted that the then AICC President Nijalingappa unveiled the Gandhi statue in 1969 and the then Congress Committee member K Kamaraj, the then PCC president Kakani Venkata Ratnam and other dignitaries attended the inaugural function.
Speaking to The Hans India, District Congress president Venugopala Reddy condemned the proposal of Chittoor Municipal Corporation authorities for removing the existing Gandhi statue.
“The TDP has no moral right to touch Gandhi statue since it didn’t even bother to initiate repair works to the statue. The Congress party will not keep mum, if civic body tries to shift it”, he added.
When asked to comment on the decision of the Chittoor Municipal Corporation, Chittoor incharge Mayor Subramanyam admitted that the existing Gandhi statue is in irreparable condition.
He said there was a proposal to erect a metal statue in proposed Statue Island near Chittoor One Town police station.
