Immediately after getting the idea, the forest staff have discussed the subject among themselves and implemented soon. As part of it, they opened a bank to supply saplings to the public. Even the government is also giving priority to plant more saplings and to protect environment, minimise pollution and to make AP green. The government is also implementing Vanam-Manam programme and encouraging the public to plant more saplings in their colonies, lands and farms.
Now, the forest department in Vizianagaram started a ‘plant bank’ to supply 20 varieties of saplings to the public at free of cost. It set up the bank beside the Collector’s office and giving the saplings. Anybody can get three saplings from the plant bank by submitting their Aadhaar card and can take away.
Actually, the forest department is running a nursery at Phoolbhagh, which is five kilometers away from Vizianagaram and the people are not interested to go there to collect the saplings. So the forest staff is maintaining the another outlet by the name of ‘plant bank’ here for the convenience of the public.
Divisional forest officer Venugopal said, “We have been supplying the plants at the bank from August 16. bamboo, jamoon, eucalyptus and guava are the common saplings we can get everywhere. But we are giving some medicinal plants here to create health awareness among public.
We are giving a plant that has more vitamin values. By chewing some leaves daily, one can improve his immunity. Even we are giving a plant by the name of insulin, which improves the production of insulin in human body.
A diabetic patient can control his percentage of sugar in his blood by eating some leaves of this plant daily. We will run the bank throughout the year. So far, we have distributed more than 3,000 saplings and most of the people want to take medicinal plants.”
Lalitha Kumari and Jyothi, housewives of Vizianagaram town who came there to take the saplings said, We are happy to take these medicinal plants from this bank. We have some place to plant the saplings and we prefer to plant the medicinal saplings, which are helpful in protecting our health.”
