Eluru: Director General, Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR), Trilochan Mohapatra, called upon horticulture scientists to take up research and extension works according to the national and international needs.He was participating as the chief guest at the second convocation of Dr YSR Horticulture University held at Venkataramannagudem in Tadepalligudem mandal on Friday. University vice-chancellor Dr BMC Reddy presided over the convocation.
Speaking on the occasion, the Director General said that nutritional food security will only be possible with horticulture crops. He added that though the country has food security, these horticulture crops will be useful to supply nutrition food and to control diseases. He suggested to the researchers and scientists to encourage farmers to take up rainforest horticulture crops.
Triolchan said that horticulture graduates should do research on the horticulture crops that give farmers higher income and added that the horticulture department has already been striving hard in this direction. He said that the government’s main aim is to develop horticulture products with technology and supply it to the farming community.
He observed that horticulture development will be possible only through education, research and extension. Vice-chancellor of YSR Horticulture University, Dr BMC Reddy, said that research will be taken up with the cooperation of scientists of 17 horticulture research centres in the State to develop higher-income crops for the farmers.
The Director General and the Vice-Chancellor gave away the degree and post graduate certificates to the students besides presenting the doctorate certificates. Students S Lokeswari and T Samatha at horticulture degree level won the Anne Sikhamani Memorial Gold Medal for gaining highest marks at degree level of horticultural honours.
Sheikh Sameena Begum and G Koteswara Rao won the Dasaradhi Memorial Gold Medal in MSc horticulture. In lecturer cadre Dr D Srinivsa Reddy (Entomology) and in Scientists Category Senior Scientist Dr SBV Chalapati Rao (Entomology) won the awards for 2015-16.
Andhra Pradesh Horticulture Commissioner Chiranjeevi Chowdary, Sri Venkateswara Veterinary University vice-chancellor, Dr Manmohan Singh and others participated in the programme.
