Tirupati: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu stated that his government has been mulling over a legislation to bar candidates without individual latrines in their houses, from contesting in the local body elections. He participated in a programme organised to declare 110 municipalities and corporations and 1368 panchayats as open defecation-free (ODF), here on Sunday.

Speaking on the occasion, he said the proposed legislation was aimed to translate the government-sponsored open defecation-free (ODC) campaign into a reality. Naidu said the sarpanches and heads of civic bodies would be made accountable in making the campaign a success. “Rural areas still have to go a long way to fulfill the objective of individual sanitary latrines (ISL),” he observed.

He said that the government would not end up with making the State open defecation free (ODF) but go walk the extra mile to ensure total sanitation ODF Plus in all villages and towns.The Chief Minister called upon the panchayats and municipalities to attain ODF plus status by fulfilling all requirements with regard to sanitation, health including waste management in the entire town or village.

“To achieve this objective, the government plans to set up energy from waste plants in 50 towns. Compost production will be taken up immediately as part of waste management in the remaining towns and cities. In the rural areas, plans are afoot to set up WEP, covering villages in 50 km radius.

The grave yards in the villages will be given a facelift. Women from SHGs will be involved in waste management, maintenance of school and community toilets, to improve sanitation and health in rural areas,” he informed.Naidu said that he was greeted by heaps of garbage during his 2000 km Padayatra “Apart from unbearable sink before entering a village, it is an ordeal for women to answer nature call. Poor are the worst hit hard due to lack of sanitation and are prone to diseases,” he added.

Stating that AP was leading in complying with Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) objectives, he said that even Prime Minister was all praise for the cleanliness in the famous Lord Venkateswara temple, Tirumala. “Despite a huge turnout of pilgrims every day, the maintenance at the shrine and the hill top town is extremely good,” he averred.

Later, Chief Minister launched Chandranna Bima at a meeting held in SV University auditorium.
Addressing the gathering, after paying floral tributes to the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Sastri, he said that AP was the first State to introduce such an insurance scheme.It will be beneficial to two core people engaged in unorganised sector. The insurance amount of Rs 5 lakh in case of death or permanent disability, will reach the family of the policy holder within 15 days,” he informed.
