The IIITs in the State are providing an excellent opportunity to the poor students from rural areas to become highly skilled engineers. Considering the huge demand for these institutions, the government has decided to set up three more IIITs at Ongole, Srikakulam and Anantapur. Admissions in Anantapur IIIT would be done from next year. As the location for the Ongole IIT had been finalised at Nallajerla, the foundation stone would be laid by the Chief Minister soon,” said the Minister.

He said that the government was giving top priority to the education sector despite facing a financial crisis. “Even though we have a deficit budget, we are allocating about 17.5 per cent of it to the education sector. This year the education budget is around Rs 21500 crore.

Even though the government is providing facilities like free education, mid-day meals etc, poor families do not want to send their children to government schools. To win their confidence, we are starting English medium in all schools and IIT-JEE foundation course in high schools. The NRIs from the State have agreed to provide digital classroom equipment worth with Rs 30 crore to nearly 5000 schools.

On our part, we are providing infrastructure in schools at a cost of Rs 5000 crore with the intention of providing value-based education to the students,” said Srinivasa Rao. “We have submitted a proposal for Rs 200 crore each for construction of a IIIT at Ongole and Srikakulam, in the first phase. The approval for the same would come from the state government soon and the Chief Minister will lay the foundation stone for the constructions,” said Rama Chandra Raju, vice chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies.

The minister for transport, roads and buildings Siddha Raghava Rao, Ongole MLA Damacharla Janardhan, Kondepi MLA Dola Bala Veeranjaneya Swamy, district collector Sujatha Sharma, Director of IIIT Ongole E Vishwanath Reddy, Telugu Raitu Sangham president Karanam Balaram and other officials participated in the programme.
