Eluru: About 17,000 single men applied for gas connections in West Godavari district out of the total applications of 85,000 received by the officials, according to Collector K Bhaskar.While discussing the gas distribution position in the district with Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) Telangana and Andhra Pradesh Chief Manager Mainak Patra and Area Chief Manager Ch Vijayakumar at District Collectorate here on Friday, the Collector requested the oil companies to respond positively to sanction connections to those single male persons under Deepam scheme.

He said according to the norms, the Deepam connections have to be sanctioned to women only. However, during the recent survey it was revealed that these 17,000 male persons are living singly following the death of their housewives or without women in the house. He said that due to the norms, these persons could not get gas connections under Deepam scheme.

The oil Companies have to decide on this issue positively to enable the district administration sanction 100 per cent connections in the district, he added. The Collector said that every household will be sanctioned gas connection in the district by March 2017. He said that no one should use the firewood for cooking in the district. He said if necessary the district administration will sanction second cylinder to schools where the mid-day meals programme have been active.

The Collector said so far 10.15 lakh gas connections have been sanctioned in the district and another 85,000 applications are pending for the connection. Telangana, Andhra Pradesh Circle Chief Manager Mainak Patra assured that IOC is ready to sanction new connections to the district and stated that West Godavari district stood in the first place in sanctioning the gas connections in both the Telugu States. Joint Collector P Koteswara Rao, District Supply Officer Shivashankar Reddy and others participated in the meeting.
