Visakhapatnam: The public-sector Visakhapatnam Steel Plant is caught in a maze of problems. It is eagerly waiting for succor to wriggle out of its loss over Rs 1,400 crore.

The survival of the steel plant is in a quandary due to lack of commitment on the part of the powers-that-be to pull it out of the red. The Nava Ratna steel plant is caught in a crisis because of not having captive mines and also impact of the Hudhud cyclone.

The rulers are only making promises that the government will come to its rescue. In practice, a concrete action is yet to be contemplated.

While the employees, who are dependent on the steel plant for their survival, find the going very tough, politicos are finding one issue or the other out of the steel plant to further their election campaign.

According to steel plant employees’ union president Ayodhya Rama, the Hudhud created havoc and caused loss of Rs 418 crore to the steel plant property. But, the insurance provider calculated the loss at only Rs 140 crore.

The loss of production due to the cyclone was put at Rs 215 crore and loss to infrastructure facilities was put at Rs 203 crore. But, there is no apparent move from the state government to help the steel plant overcome the loss.

Steel plant employees’ union general secretary YT Doss demanded two-year tax holiday for the steel plant. YSRCP city president Gudivada Amaranath announced that the YSRCP would launch an agitation to save the steel plant.

Congress City President Behera Bhaskar Rao said that the Congress is always in the forefront to revive the past glory of the steel plant. The Congress would fight till the government allots captive mines to the steel plant.
