Vijayawada: CPM politburo member Brinda Karat alleged that the State government was flouting democratic norms, while handling farmers and people’s issues. She accused the government of using Section 144 as a weapon to suppress the voice of the farmers and common people.

It should be recalled that the CPM national leader visited Tundurru village of Bhimavaram mandal in West Godavari on Thursday and villagers, who were protesting against Aqua Mega Food Park. She inquired about the consequences of setting up food park and law and order situation in the village.

Addressing media conference at the State party office here on Friday, Brinda Karat said that the food park would create many environmental issues, contaminating tanks, which were lifeline to many villages.

Condeming the use of police force to suppress the agitation, she said that the police were searching for 200 villagers and cases were booked under section 307 on seven locals, who opposed the construction of the mega food processing plant.

She reminded that local panchayats has not given permission for setting up of the plant in Tundurru and alleged that the Telugu Desam government was flouting democratic norms. She expressed apprehensions that the entire village would be polluted with the construction of food park.

“Both, Chandrababu Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi are working with a common agenda. They are implementing anti-farmers and pro-corporate policies,” she averred.

Referring to national issues, Brinda said that the CPM was against the triple Talaq procedure but insisted the Central government should not forcibly impose Uniform Civil Code on Muslims.

She alleged the BJP and RSS were attacking the Muslims and Dalits on the name of Gau Rakshaks and demanded that such organisations should be banned. Talking about Rohit Vemula, who committed suicide in Hyderabad Central University, Brinda Karat said it was shameful that Chandrababu Naidu never spoke about the important issue.

“The Chief Minister was maintaining deafening silence of Rohit Vemula issue, when the whole nation condemned the demise of Rohit Vemula and events that lead to the death of the student,” she remarked.
