Tirupati: The Indian Science Congress scheduled to be held for five days from January 3 in SV University in the temple town is likely to be mired in a political controversy. The university authorities have decided to suspend classes from November 1 for two months to facilitate arrangements for the mega event.

The decision invited strong opposition from the SRC’s student outfit and student organisation contended that the university’s academic calendar will take a beating due to closure of classes for such a long period.

A decision regarding suspension of classes was taken after a meeting held by Vice Chancellor Avula Damodharam with principals of various colleges and officials of the university, two weeks ago.

Accordingly, the principals were directed to complete the syllabus by Oct 30 and get ready for holding the first semester examination after the reopening of the university on January 8, according to SVU Registrar M Devarajulu. “Therefore, the fear of the science congress affecting classes is untrue”, he maintained.

However, student outfit’s district unit president Hariprasad Reddy told The Hans India that his organisation was not against the Science Congress. We only have reservations over its adverse impact on the academic calendar”, he asserted.

He apprehended that suspension of classes for two months will derail the academic year more so with regard to PG final year students. In a bid to drive home his point, Reddy recalled that the then university authorities had closed classes for only two weeks when ISC was held in SVU the university in 1983.

Contending that closure of classes for two months now is an irrational decision. While many students felt that the closure of hostels following the suspension of classes for ISC would force them go home that is away from the city (university) at a time the APPSC is preparing to hold examinations for large number of posts. `

Preparing for the competitive exam will be difficult in our homes situation in villages with no facilities like internet. Here, in the university there is lot of scope for us to prepare well for exams’” many students said.

However, Bharatiya Janata Party Education Cell district convener Kalluru Vishnu Vardhan Reddy differed with YSRC student wing’s view point. There will be some delay in conducting the examination which will be in June instead of May but it may not have any adverse impact on the students

SVU Registrar Devarajulu, however, expressed anguish over the science congress getting politicised. He said the university had taken all the required measures to minimise the inconvenience to the students. There will be absolutely no problem for the PG first year students while for the final year students too the university will see the examinations are held and results published in June itself he said stating emphatically that ISC will no way hinder the student future prospsects.

ISC will become a feather in the university’s cap and it will fetch Rs 40-50 crore with which the university’s face will undergo a lot of change, he said and added that the international science Congress all boost up the science education and will also spur economic activity as the university hosts 20000 delegates who will remain in the city for five days.

``It is a great opportunity for the university to hold the science jamboree after a gap of 34 years and it will have its image boosted worldwide by hosting the programme.’’ He averred.
