Chittoor: The role of the police in the present-day society is unmatched. Police personnel have the responsibility to protect the interests of public and maintain law and order without compromising at any level, Chittoor Superintendent of Police G Srinivas has said. “The government is committed to protect the interests of police personnel,” he said. To improve the skills of police personnel, a skill orientation programme was held at the District Police Headquarters here in which Additional Superintendent of Police Abhisheik Mehanthy and others took part.

Addressing the police officers, Srinivas said that the police personnel should improve relations with the public as their foremost responsibility. “There are 84 police stations in the district having full-fledged strength. Instructions were given to set up reception centres to facilitate the public to register their grievances. The station officer should receive the complainant with courtesy. This would help the police to instil confidence among the public over the commitment of the police to attend to their grievances,” he said.

The orientation programme would be organised in each sub-division of the police and it was the responsibility of the DSP concerned to improve the skills of the police. “The government has introduced several welfare measures to extract qualitative services from the police. On an experimental basis, the Community Police Officers system has been introduced in Chittoor district, selecting youth interested in discharging police duties.

The newly selected Community Police Officers are doing a good job, easing the task of the police particularly in respect of traffic control. The Chittoor police has done a superb job in eliminating the menace of red sanders smuggling,” the SP said. Abhisheik Mehanthy said police should cultivate good habits without giving room for complaints from the public.
