Visakhapatnam: Four more Maoists, two of them women, died in an encounter with the AP Greyhounds and Odisha police in Bejjangi forest between Ramgarh and Panasaput villages in the early hours Tuesday bringing the death toll to 28 in the gun battle that began on Sunday night.
“We took up massive sanitization programme soon after Monday’s encounter in the morning when Greyhounds faced a volley of fire from the Maoists.
The Greyhounds personnel returned the fire resulting in the death of four more Maoists,” said Director General of Police N Sambashiva Rao. Talking to reporters at slain commando Bakur’s house here, the DGP said it was not unilateral fire from the police forces as being claimed by some organizations but a genuine encounter.
On Bakur’s death, the DGP said to escape Maoist fire, the senior commando and others jumped into the canal. Others managed to swim under water and escape while Bakur remained in the water and drowned.
Rao presented a cheque for Rs 40 lakh to the parents of Abu Bakur at his residence in the morning. The DGP later flew to Narsipatnam and hovered around the encounter site supervising the operations.
Meanwhile, Visakhapatnam SP (Rural) Rahul Dev Sharma, camping in the border, said the search operations were still on and the death figure might go up. He said the four Maoists killed in the morning are yet to be identified.
Malkangiri SP Mitrabhanu Mohapatra said all the 24 bodies recovered on Monday have been identified and they will be handed over to their relatives after following due procedure.
