Guntur: There is a pressing need to construct another flyover bridge in Brodipet to solve the traffic problems .The existing flyover bridge which was constructed by the Roads and Buildings department six decades ago is unable to cater to the needs of the city. The traffic from Arundalpet and Brodipet areas which have emerged as posh residential localities has also increased significantly. Besides, there is a need to construct another bridge to connect one town and two town areas in the city. Traffic jams have become a common occurrence on the bridge during rush hours from 9 am to 11 am and 5 pm to 7 pm. Also, rallies of any kind would have to pass over the flyover bridge.

According to Transport department officials, there are about 6.5 lakh vehicles in Guntur city including 4 .5 lakh two wheelers, 20,000 to 30,000 cars and 2000 school, college and city buses and about 20 ,000 autos in the city. The number of vehicles has been increasing every year. With Amaravati being declared the State capital, over 20 government offices have been shifted from Hyderabad to the region. Some of the employees working in the temporary Secretariat are also residing in the city.

According to Traffic DSP K Srinivas, on an average, over 60,000 vehicles pass over the flyover bridge at Brodipet. “The old bridge is unable to cater to the needs of the people of the city. There is a need to construct another flyover bridge to solve traffic problem,” he said. He opined that a Rail Under Bridge (RUB) should be constructed at Railway Reservation Office in Arundalpet connecting railway station east side and west side.

If RUB is constructed, all the two -wheelers and cars can pass through the bridge. Buses will pass through the flyover bridge. Technology is also available to construct a RUB without affecting the existing railway track. There is no need to acquire the land either. This is not expensive and work can be completed within a short time,” said Srinivas.

The Roads and Buildings Department is actively considering a proposal to widen the existing the flyover bridge or construct an elevated bridge to resolve the traffic woes. The engineering officials of the department are conducting a feasibility study and will submit their report to the government soon.

The existing Brodipet flyover bridge constructed 60 years ago, is a 40-foot bridge. We are considering the proposal to widen the existing bridge into a six-lane bridge or construct an elevated corridor. We will conduct a feasibility study and submit a report to the government which will take a decision soon,” said Roads and Buildings department superintendent engineer KV Raghavendra Rao.
