Vijayawada: The temporary capital city Vijayawada is facing severe problems due to lack of underground drainage network (UGD) though the Chief Minister is often persuading the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) to take measures for city’s beautification and cleanliness.
The VMC is lagging behind in providing underground drainage facility to the city even though deadline (March) is fast approaching to the Centrally-sponsored scheme Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). The VMC is yet to provide Sewer Collection Network and other drainage facilities to half of the city, which extended in 63 sq km area, since the launch of JNNURM in 2005. Surprisingly, the corporation, which got Swachh Bharat award for open defecation-free (ODF) two weeks ago, is eying on canal beautification ignoring the crucial sewer network to every home.
Due to severe funds crunch prior to JNNURM and lack of dedication during the implementation of JNNURM, the VMC did not provide UGD system for entire city for years. The canals passing through the city, which are being used for drinking and irrigation purpose, are full of sewage due to lack of underground drainage system.
The corporation took up UGD works, including Sewer Collection Network, laying of DI pumping mains, construction of sump and pumping stations and erection of pump sets and transformers under JNNURM scheme a few years ago. It had decided to build two Sewerage Treatment Plants (STPs) with a capacity of 20 MLD each in Jakkampudi village on the outskirts of the city to provide sewer network to western part of the city.
However, it could complete only one of them as the contractors left the work due to non-payment of bills by the VMC on time. Besides, pipeline work to connect STP in Jakkampudi and pump house in one town area is still in progress. For northern part of the city, VMC had built an STP at Ajit Singh Nagar and the pipeline works are nearing completion.
On the other hand, the VMC is striving to mobilise people to take house service connections before commissioning UGD network. Madhuranagar, Ayodhyanagar, Devinagar, New R R Pet, Prakashnagar, Rajivnagar, NSC Bose Nagar, Kanaka Durga Nagar and some other slum areas would be covered under the STP located at Ajit Singh Nagar.
The corporation has set a target for around 1.2 lakh house service connections in the city by 2021. The present UGD connections are around 68,000 in eastern and southern parts of the city. The present capacity of sewerage treatment in the city is 80 MLD and 70 MLD to be commissioned. The target of total capacity is to provide 150 MLD by 2021 for estimated population of 12 lakh by then.
