Tirupati: Kavali Murali, a private employee who died after he met with a road accident, helped four people get a new lease of life with the donation of his organs including liver, kidneys and heart.

The 27-year-old man from Kavalivaripalli in Pakala mandal, a driver in the city, who suffered grievous injuries in an accident at Nendragunta on October 30, was admitted to SVIMS. He was later shifted to Apollo Hospital, Chennai, for better treatment. But, the next day (October 31), his family members brought him back to SVIMS for donation of his organs in his native place instead of Chennai, after the doctors in Apollo Hospital declared him as a brain dead case.

Though illiterate, his father Bhaskaraiah and mother Lakshmidevi, working as farm labourers, and his wife Aswini came forward to donate the organs of Murali to give life to others.

Acting swiftly, SVIMS authorities informed Jeevandan Trust, Vijayawada, about the family members’ wish to donate Murali’s organs and send the waiting list of patients requiring organ transplantation.

Jeevandan Trust officials, doctors from the three hospitals in Chennai, Nellore and Vizag, also reached Tirupati on Tuesday to complete the formalities for the organ donation and make arrangements for the safe transportation of the organs after retrieval.

SVIMS director-cum-Vice-Chancellor Dr TS Ravikumar asked the doctors to make arrangements for retrieval of the two kidneys, heart and liver on Wednesday morning.

Ravikumar said one Kidney was allotted for Narayana Hospital, Nellore, which was transported by the doctors by road, while the heart, allotted to a patient of Malar Hospital, Chennai, was taken by a special flight. The liver was flown to Vizag by the doctors of Care Hospital. Tirupati urban police made arrangements for the transport of the doctors along with the retrieved organs to the airport and also Nellore. The other kidney would be transplanted to a renal failure patient at SVIMS. It was the third organ retrieval at SVIMS.

Ravikumar, Medical Superintendent Dr V Sathyanarayana, along with a team of doctors of CT Surgery, Urology, Nephrology, Gastroenterology, Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine, doctors of Chennai Malar Hospital, Vizag Care Hospital and Nellore Narayana Hospital were involved in the retrieval and transportation of the organs.

Later, Ravikumar handed over Murali’s body to the family members and appreciated their decision to donate the organs.
