Madanapalle to become Madanapuri Yugandhar

Madanapalle: It may sound like the name of yesteryear silver screen villain Madanpuri, but all the stakeholders in the historical town of Madanapalle have unanimously agreed at the Municipal Council meeting to request the State government to change the name of their town to Madanapuri. It may be recalled here that Anne Besant started Besant Theosophical College here in 1915. The tune to the National Anthem Jana Gana Mana was composed by Rabindranath Tagore when he stayed here for a few days.
Leaders of all political parties, during the Municipal Council meeting, were unanimous in claiming that the ‘Palle’ in the name of their town sounded like a remote village and it would be better to call their town Madanapuri henceforth.
Municipal chairman Kodavali Sivaprasad, supporting the demand put forward by vice-chairman B Bhavani Prasad, said that the word ‘Palle’ sounds like a remote village and it was time the name of Madanapalle municipality was changed to Madanapuri municipality. He said if the name was changed, there would be additional benefits to the town. MLC Naresh Reddy, concurring with the opinion, said that the name does not reflect the true character of the town.
Madanapalle was founded by Ahobila Naidu way back in 1618 and the then Collector of Kadapa, Sir Thomas Munroe, used to visit Madanapalle every summer due to its pleasant climate. In 1850, Madanapalle was upgraded into sub-division with FB Manoly as its first Sub-Collector. In 1961, Madanapalle was upgraded into municipality.
Noted philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti, who founded Rishi Valley School here, also belonged to Madanapalle.
The unanimous resolution passed by the Madanapalle Municipal Council would be forwarded to the State government for taking action to change its name into Madanapuri.
